  • Our History

We began our operation in 1971, a time of crisis in Lafayette, Louisiana, when the departure of funeral homes from the ambulance transportation field due to new federal regulations.  In the midst of nationwide emergency, Acadian Ambulance was established and trained the first Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) in the state of Louisiana. Our two ambulances and eight employees served the 279 square miles of Lafayette Parish with an operating budget of $190,000. The first membership drive enrolled 8,400 members and returning Vietnam veterans with medic experience provided our initial source of manpower.

Almost four decades and six subsidiaries later, Acadian has grown to nearly 3,000 employees, ranging from NREMTs and pilots to health and safety technicians and support staff; our fleet includes 255 ground ambulances, 9 helicopters, 5 fixed-wing airplanes, and 30 van/bus transports, at 107 stations in 38 parishes and counties spanning Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi. Our monitoring operations have even expanded to the Midwest where a newly established center now functions in Chicago, Illinois.

Since its inception, Acadian Ambulance has been recognized as one of the nation's best in its field. Our incorporation of the innovative technology and superior service in the medical field has earned us honors and led to our tremendous expansion.

    2011 EMT of the Year
Todd Weir, South Central Texas, has been selected as our 2011 EMT of the Year.

Todd joined Acadian’s Bexar County operation in October 2009 and his compassion and knowledge have gained him the respect of his colleagues and patients. He is a tremendous ambassador for Acadian and is a dedicated and passionate medic.

“When I began working for Acadian, I soon realized this would be far from ‘just a job’ to me,” Todd said.

“I thoroughly enjoy patient care and the opportunity to assist those in need while also educating the public on what EMS truly is. Acadian offers both while ensuring that only the best employees represent the company. I feel the professionalism of Acadian’s crews while assisting patients and their families far exceeds the standard set by many other EMS providers.”

Todd plans to finish his bachelor’s degree in education with the goal of becoming an instructor and “passing along my experiences and values to future Basic students.”
